Getting the most from your buddy

Your buddy is the person you can ask anything, especially the things that feel too small to ask. What a buddy is for, and ten questions people wish they'd asked.

Someone has said yes to being your buddy for your first few months. They aren't your manager, they won't be judging how you're doing, and nothing you talk about goes to anyone else. They are simply a friendly person who knows how things work here.

What a buddy is for

  • The questions that feel too small or too obvious to ask anyone else.
  • How things actually work here, beyond what's written down.
  • A few good people to meet. Your buddy will introduce you to three.

Ten questions people wish they'd asked

  • Where do people usually have lunch?
  • How do people here ask for help?
  • Is it normal that nobody has replied to my message yet?
  • Which meetings really matter, and which are fine to skip?
  • Who knows how expenses, travel, or equipment actually work?
  • What's something everyone knows but nobody says?
  • How do people prefer to be contacted: chat, email, or a quick call?
  • What would you do differently in your first month?
  • Who should I meet outside my team?
  • What do people here do for fun?
There are no silly questions in week one. There are only questions you didn't get to ask.

If it isn't quite a fit

That's completely fine, and it isn't anybody's fault. You can quietly ask for someone else from your Home. No reason is needed, and your buddy won't be told why.

Keep this in mind

Your buddy is here for the small questions.Ask them early, while they're still easy to ask.

Put it into practice

Pick two questions from the list above and bring them to your first coffee.
