Before your coffee

A one-minute read to help you relax, show up with curiosity, and enjoy the conversation.

Meeting someone new can feel exciting. It can also feel a little uncertain.

You may wonder what you will talk about, whether the conversation will flow, or whether you will make a good impression.

Take a breath.

You do not need to impress anyone. You are simply meeting another person: someone with their own experiences, questions, interests, and stories.

And if the hardest part is wondering what you will say once you sit down, talking to strangers without feeling awkward walks through exactly that moment.

Bring curiosity, not a performance

You do not need to arrive with perfect answers or an impressive story. A good conversation is not a presentation. It is something two people discover together.

Ask about what genuinely interests you. Listen to understand, rather than waiting for your turn to speak. Let the conversation move naturally instead of trying to control where it goes.

You do not need to fill every silence

A short pause does not mean the conversation is going badly. People sometimes need a moment to think, remember, or decide what they want to say.

Give the conversation room to breathe.

Let it be unexpected

You may begin by talking about work and end up discussing books, family, travel, community, an idea, or a problem someone is trying to solve. That is often where the best conversations go.

You are not trying to cover the right topics. You are trying to notice the person in front of you.

One simple intention

Before the coffee begins, choose one small intention:

Learn one thing you would like to remember about this person.

That is enough. You do not need to leave with an opportunity, a plan, or a new best friend.

Sometimes a good coffee is simply two people feeling glad they met.

Keep this in mind

You do not need to be impressive.Be present. Be curious. Be kind.

Put it into practice

Before your next coffee, take ten seconds and ask yourself: what is one thing you would genuinely like to learn about this person? Then let the conversation unfold.

Ready for your next conversation?

Meet someone worth knowing, and let curiosity do the rest.
